Thanks so much for following our tour. A caution if you are reading it now: each new day posts above the previous so the story is told in reverse-day order. ITALY VENICE April 7 2011. 9pm, dinner at Trattoria alla Scala. Salmon, clams, calimari, escalope Milano, verdure cotte, insalata miste and creme caramel, all with vintage Chianti. Delectable! But tomorrow morning we begin the long journey home.

ITALY VENICE April 7 2011. We arrive early morning for our visit to the DOGES' PALACE. This was begun in the 11th century and was the administrative office for the entire Venetian Empire and the residence of the Doge (like king).

ITALY VENICE April 7 2011. A frightening door detail inside the Doges' Palace. The entire palace was propaganda, designed to strike awe and fear in the petitioners. Very effective.

ITALY VENICE April 7 2011. The Golden Staircase in the Doges Palace. Impressive today, but imagine the effect on visitors 700 years ago. At the time the Doge of Venice was one of the most powerful men in the world.
